“Bradken has extensive experience in the
design and manufacture of a wide range of
mining consumables including mill liners for
fixed plant and crawler systems products for
the mobile plant. This is the first opportunity
we have had to offer this expertise in the
design and manufacture of dragline rigging
products,” said Mr Enda Sheridan, Executive
General Manager – Mining Products.
Bradken has launched its new Harmonise™
(patent pending) dragline rigging product
range.
“We went back to first principles” said Mr.
Sheridan, “We really looked at the product
function and mine site requirements, and not
what was currently being offered in the mar-
ket. Our Harmonise rigging product range
is an innovation that showcases this design
philosophy.”
“A new quench facility has
been commissioned and
heat treatment ovens and
manipulators will be
introduced progressively
over coming months.”
“Finally, and most importantly,
our customer’s Quality
Control inspectors have
visit d ur Kansas foundry
and machine shop to carry
out stringent supplier
evaluations and have
accredited Atchison to
make their parts.”
The end result is that the
first set of large Cat rpillar
shoes were delivered in June.
These will go to Robinson
Mine in Wyoming and be
fitted to a Cat7495 mining
shovel, supporting around
1,400 metric to nes of
equipment as it goes about
its daily business mining
coal for US power utilities.
Bradken Sales and Marketing
Manager, Fraser Batts said
the strong reputation Bradken
had built over years led
the OEMs to queue up for
Bradken’s dependable, high
quality crawler products.
“Our very success had
created a problem, albeit
a positive one,” Fraser s id.
“As the upswing in mining
continued, our main crawler
shoe plant, Runcorn,
eventually filled up and we
had to look for other plants
in the group with the
potential to produce shoe
to the required quality level
and cost.
“This is when Atc ison
Foundry in Kansas, USA,
stepped up to the challenge.”
Over the past 18 months,
Atchison technicians have
been developing methods
and patterns for production
of a range of crawler shoe
castings to take up the
overload from Runcorn.
“Personnel have undergone
crawler product traini g
and various aspects of the
Atchison facility have been
upgraded to enable the
production process to meet
the product requirements,”
Fraser said.
The delivery
of the first set
of Caterpiller shoes
manufactured at
Bradken’s atchison
Foundry in Kansas,
Usa, is a milestone
in the growth
of the Crawler
systems business.
It is a strong indication
of how significant
manufacturing beyond
Australia now underpins
the needs of major Bradken
customers around the world.
Additionally, it is an important
development for the Atchison
facility in expanding its
repertoire beyond capital
products to the more
sustainable consumable
products business.
The resources boom has
resulted in unprecedented
demand for mining equipment
and in turn, our OEM
customers are clamoring
for more Bradken crawler
shoes to keep their
behemoths moving.
One of our major customers,
Caterpillar, has been in a
period of growth since 2003.
In 2009, it expanded its
Milwaukee Factory’s capacity
and now builds more than
24 electric mining shovels
annually. That’s an average
of two every month – quite
an impressive feat when you
consider that each machine
is made up of thousands
of components from a
500-tonne car body
fabrication to the smallest
electrical switch.
These shovels are so big
they have to be shipped
in pieces to the mine sites
around the world and
assembled at the mine by
experienced field technicians.
To build a shovel, you have
to first start with a stable
platform – the tracks.
For that reason, it is of
critical importance tracks
are delivered on time so the
shovel erection can begin
on time, with everything
else coming up behind it.
