OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS
the
mining and resources industry in PNG
has experienced a period of
unprecedented activity and growth with
new developments and considerable
capital expansion projects.
In 2011 when GlobalEyes last reviewed
Bradken’s presence in the region, the
Crawler Systems Business had only
recently supplied two of the Country’s
major mines, Ok Tedi and Lihir, with
Evolution crawler shoes.
Regional Sales Manager for Bradken’s
Crawler Systems Business in PNG,
Anthony Corcoran, said that since that
time the proven performance benefits of
Bradken’s products has given these two
customers the confidence to switch over
to 100% Bradken designed
undercarriage components.
“Between the two mines there are
currently 12 large (over 200T) mining
size excavators in operation that Bradken
is able to supply undercarriage
components for, and at this time our
Evolution crawler shoes are fitted to all
12,” Anthony said.
Located in the Western Province of
PNG, the Ok Tedi mine is an open pit
copper and gold mine. The mine
operates a total of eight large mining
class hydraulic excavators (four 6050
and four 6030).
While all eight machines on this site are
already using Bradken Evolution crawler
shoes Anthony says further plans are in
place to replace all OEM undercarriage
components on the fleet with Bradken
products.
“In June 2014 Bradken was successful in
securing a contract with Ok Tedi Mining
Limited (OTML) which will see all eight
large excavators running 100% Bradken
undercarriage components by the end of
2015 as change outs of rollers,
sprockets and idlers are required,”
Anthony said.
The Lihir mine, located on Niolam Island
in the New Ireland Province of PNG (and
in the crater of an extinct volcano that is
geothermally active), is home to one of
the largest known gold deposits in the
world. The mine currently operates three
6050 and one 6030 hydraulic
excavators.
Building on the success
of the Evolution range of
crawler shoes at a
number of prominent
mines in Papua New
Guinea (PNG), Bradken’s
Crawler Systems
Business is continuing to
build a reputation as a
supplier of choice for
undercarriage
components to some of
the Country’s major mine
operators.
