Presented annually in June as part of the Company’s Sustainability Month program, this award is given at the discretion of CEO Sean Winstone and recognises a manufacturing site across Bradken’s global network that has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to site sustainability and continuous improvement over the past year.
In announcing the win, Mr Winstone congratulated the Atchison team for their efforts in reducing emissions, energy and water consumption, setting a high standard for environmental responsibility across the business.
“Over the past year the Atchison team has worked diligently to help Bradken move toward its carbon neutral goal, by meeting and exceeding their emissions intensity targets,” Mr Winstone said.
“Despite increasing production levels, the team was able to reduce emissions by almost 6% of Bradken’s total foundry group emissions for the year, the most substantial emissions reduction contribution of all our foundries, through an 11% reduction in electricity consumption and a 26% reduction in natural gas consumption (compared to the previous year).
“Similarly, by focusing on opportunities to reduce water use – an area where Atchison’s intensity metric is significantly higher than our other foundries – the site saved about eight million litres of water and reduced absolute water consumption by more than 14 million litres year on year.
Mr Winstone also highlighted the contributions of the people whose commitment and dedication to environmental sustainability at Atchison have made these improvements possible.
“In the true spirit of collaboration and shared success, from the leadership team to the shop floor the collective efforts of the entire team have been instrumental in achieving these results.
“I congratulate the Atchison team. Minimising our impact on the environment by reducing our emissions and resource use is not only the right thing to do, but it also benefits our business by cutting unnecessary costs. Their commitment sets a standard for excellence in sustainability across our organisation.”
Ken Bean, Vice President Operations at Atchison, said this award was well-deserved credit for a dedicated team and their relentless pursuit to eliminate waste.
“What makes this recognition so gratifying is that our results have been achieved without any capital investment,” Mr Bean said.
“Instead, we implemented innovations like arranging production schedules to optimize heats or only running full heat treat loads and focused on tasks like hunting down leaks and turning off unused equipment.
“We know as a team we have to work smarter in order to bring about positive results. This has truly been a team effort and I am incredibly proud of the what the Atchison team has been able to achieve together.”
