Trading up: Building a career in metalwork

Ever thought about changing direction and diving into a completely new career? That’s exactly what Talia, from our manufacturing workshop in Edmonton, Canada, did. After high school, she trained and worked as an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) in the oil and gas region of northern Canada. She originally planned to become a paramedic, but the COVID lockdowns put her plans on hold. With time to reflect, she felt drawn to a more hands-on career where she could tap into her creative side.

Bradken’s offer of a trade apprenticeship came at just the right time - Talia made the leap and decided to "go full send" into a welding career. An enthusiastic and energetic individual, her infectious positivity and work ethic makes her an asset to our team in Edmonton and a role model to other young women considering a future as a tradesperson. Read on to hear more from Talia.

Tell us about your role at Bradken and how it came about: I’m currently a second-year welding apprentice working in the prep department of the Edmonton workshop. Our site mostly produces wear piping for the mining and resources industry. Together my team is responsible for laying out all the components needed for a project, and then cutting, beveling, gouging and taking care of the overall preparation work to make sure everything is ready to be passed on to the fitters and welders for the next stage in the manufacturing process.
I joined the team in Edmonton in July 2023, starting out in the finishing area where I worked on spot repairs and surface grinding. Now I’m getting more training across different departments, which is really exciting. Becoming a welder is a bit different to what my younger self though I’d be (a Marine Biologist, Neurosurgeon or Police Officer), but I love it and I’m all in!
I spent a lot of years sending resumes out to different manufacturing businesses looking for an opportunity with no luck. I would have been happy to get a start in any number of different trade apprenticeships, but Bradken was the first company to give me a chance - to see potential in me even though I didn’t have experience - and I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity.
What do you enjoy most about what you do? I’m a pretty energetic person, so I actually love that my job keeps me on my feet and physically active. I also enjoy the analytical side of the work, solving problems and creating plans for new challenges as they arise. Beyond my everyday welding work, I also really enjoy getting involved in other activities around our site - I’m part of both the Engagement and Safety Committees, lending my voice as the representative for my teammates on the shopfloor, and recently helped with an event to recognise Mental Health Month.
What are your interests and hobbies outside of work? I love building and creating things with my hands. I enjoy refurbishing furniture and creating large artwork pieces, especially Halloween-themed ones! I’m also into video games and cosplaying (creating and wearing costumes to dress up as characters from movies, TV shows, comics, video games or books) – one of my costumes, Mirko from My Hero Academia, took me an entire year to create and every time I wear it to a comic con, I end up with a line of people wanting to take photos with me!
I also volunteer as a peer mentor at Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT), where I’m doing my apprenticeship, supporting four first-year students. In my own first-year, I noticed some classmates were too shy to ask for help, so I created an online community for our cohort and about 50 of the 60 students joined. We all supported each other, and some of us even became tutors. I’m a firm believer in helping others in any way I can so I’m very happy to have been able to keep mentoring.

An aspiring role model for women in trades

Talia faced a learning curve when she joined the team at Bradken’s Edmonton site, as the only woman working on the shopfloor at the time – and her teammates did too. Initially, they were cautious to avoid offense and offering to take on the ‘heavy lifting’ for her. But it didn’t take her long to demonstrate her skills, strength and willingness to learn. Now, she and her teammates work together seamlessly, and she feels fully part of the team: “we’re all good buddies and they get that I’m capable of just as much as they are. I feel very included here.” Talia’s journey has made her determined to pave the way for other women in trades, showing that there are no limits to what they can achieve.

Talia is particularly excited about Bradken Edmonton’s partnership with Women Building Futures, an Alberta-based organisation focused on empowering women to pursue careers in trades. She sees this partnership as a powerful opportunity to inspire and support women entering the industry. Her goal is to be a role model and mentor, helping others navigate the challenges of the trade and encouraging them to build successful careers in welding, fitting, or any other trade position.

What do you think makes Bradken a great place to work? For me it’s the people. They’re funny, hard-working and ridiculously good at what they do - every single one of the people I work with is amazing in their own way and there's something to learn from each of them if you listen. I was completely green when I started, I had zero training, but the whole team is helping me learn and I know they want me to be successful.
How does Bradken recognise your contributions? I recently had the opportunity to work on a large grate stand that formed part of Bradken’s setup at the MINExpo tradeshow in Las Vegas. I spent weeks working on it with the help of one of the fitters, and I was asked to weld the stand together to showcase my skills. That was the best recognition I could have ever received. The chance to have my work featured at a Bradken showcase for tens of thousands of people from around the world to see was a huge honor.
What are your future career goals? I’m still figuring out my long-term career goals, but I know I want to stay with Bradken as long as I can. For now, I’m focused on finishing my welding certification and then getting my fitter qualifications too, which is already a solid seven-year plan. Bradken’s been really supportive in helping me build my skills and gain experience, always giving me opportunities to grow and take on new challenges. It’s a great place to develop my career, and I’m excited to see where things go from here.
