Climate Action

Goal 13: Climate Action

At Bradken, we care about our planet. We acknowledge that our foundry and fabrication operations generate greenhouse gas emissions. Climate change considerations are integral to our investment and business decisions and we're committed to proactively reducing our emissions to become carbon neutral for Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030.

Our Path to Carbon Neutral

Operational Efficiency: We continually evaluate and enhance our processes to increase energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact. This includes updating equipment, adopting new technologies and optimising resource use. By implementing sustainable manufacturing practices, we minimise emissions and waste, supporting a low-carbon economy and aligning with SDG 13.

Procurement of Renewable Energy: We source and procure renewable energy in our operational areas, monitoring availability and cost-effectiveness. Bradken invests in power purchase agreements (PPAs) and upgrades site power capacity to enable electrification, reducing GHG emissions beyond local grid availability.

Plant and Equipment Upgrades: Alongside our switch to renewable electricity, we're upgrading plant, equipment and technology to transition away from fossil fuels like natural gas and LPG, while maintaining product quality and cost-effectiveness.

Operational Efficiency Example

Wodonga Air Compressors

The maintenance team at our foundry in Wodonga, Australia have replaced four of the site’s old air compressors (three 75kW and one 55 kW) with two new energy efficient compressor system with integrated dryer units (one 160 kW and one 110 kW) resulting in significant energy and cost savings as well as incorporating the latest connectivity systems to enable the provision of high quality compressed air to processes.

Compressors are used in site processes such as running the dust extraction system.

The old compressors combined accounted for about 14% of the Wodonga’s total electricity use.

Meeting the same demand, the new units are showing savings of:

  • 49% in energy used for compressed air use

  • Approx AUD$103,863 pa in electricity costs.

  • 691 tonnes in CO2 emissions
