Climate Action

Goal 13: Climate Action

Our steel foundry and fabrication operations are resource intensive and generate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Approximately 34% of Bradken’s global carbon emissions come from the use of natural gas, LPG, diesel, petrol/gasoline, and from the consumption of materials such as limestone and coal in our processes.

We are committed to proactively reducing our carbon emissions and becoming carbon neutral for Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030. This goal is ambitious when you consider many other companies in the resources sector are setting targets for 2040 and 2050.

We have developed a carbon neutral roadmap that has been embedded within our business and has the support of executive leadership.

Operational Efficiency Example

Wodonga Air Compressors

The maintenance team at our foundry in Wodonga, Australia have replaced four of the site’s old air compressors (three 75kW and one 55 kW) with two new energy efficient compressor system with integrated dryer units (one 160 kW and one 110 kW) resulting in significant energy and cost savings as well as incorporating the latest connectivity systems to enable the provision of high quality compressed air to processes.

Compressors are used in site processes such as running the dust extraction system.

The old compressors combined accounted for about 14% of the Wodonga’s total electricity use.

Meeting the same demand, the new units are showing savings of:

  • 49% in energy used for compressed air use

  • Approx AUD$103,863 pa in electricity costs.

  • 691 tonnes in CO2 emissions
